Queensland Land for Sale: The Biggest Challenges of Living on Acreage

You may have heard of people who bought an acreage, built a house on it, and are now living in bliss away from the rat race. You may even actually know some personally, and this has led to you being interested in buying a Queensland land for sale for yourself that’s far removed from the urban jungle.

The good news is that Queensland is a great place to realize your dreams of rural bliss. For starters, remote properties are practically a steal here, with double-digit acres costing less than $1 million AUD. Compare that with those in the U.K. where acreage in the low single digits costing over $1.5 million AUD are the norm.

Maintenance and insurance

That said, life on acreage comes at a cost—not only monetary cost, but time as well. Your spending on acreage doesn’t end with the purchase. Even if you’re not farming, you’ll still need to do a lot of manual labour, from collecting fallen branches and tidying up leaves to burning them.

“You’ll need to plan for maintenance and improvements, as well as insurance,” says Matt Thompson, the owner of a 40-hectare property in St. Andrews. “There’s a heap of work to be done and you sort of know that when you buy the land but when it’s yours, and you’re physically doing the work every weekend for the next year or two, you realise you don’t know how to use a piece of equipment,” he adds.

“But you have to enjoy these tasks; if you think of it as a burden, you’ll hate it,” Thompson continues.

Ordinances and covenants

Zoning ordinances may also dictate what you can do with your property. “There are so many different zonings, rules and regulations. You may need permits for dams and there may be restrictions on the use of the land,” says Kate Donaldson, who lives on acreage in Cottles Bridge.

As you can imagine, life on an acreage is a ‘love it or leave it’ sort of thing, but ultimately, discovering that perfect patch of land can provide years of enjoyment for you and your family. Consult a QLD land for sale agent such as those from Lion Land Marketing to find the acreage that supports your vision.
